What is ear wax?

Ear wax is a completely natural substance that we all produce. It forms a protective layer in the outer ear canal. It helps protect the ear against dust, dirt and infection. Your ear self-cleans however sometimes the body produces too much ear wax and this can cause issues such as pain, reduced hearing and tinnitus. Ear wax comes in all different colours from amber orange to dark brown.

Symptoms of impacted ear wax

  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Feeling of fullness
  • Pain
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
  • Dizziness
  • Itchy ears

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is considered safer than methods such as syringing and is the preferred method by ENT specialists. The procedure is undertaken using either Endoscopic Assisted Microsuction or head-mounted Loupes. The Endoscope is a small camera inserted into the ear and Loupes are magnifying glasses worn by the clinician. Both methods allow the professional to clearly view the ear at all times. A  suction probe is used in conjunction with a compact suction machine to gently remove the wax from the ear. Microsuction can be noisy but is usually quick to perform. It is recommended that the ear is oiled with Pharmaceutical Olive Oil or Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops, 3-5 days prior to your appointment unless you have or suspect a perforated eardrum.

Occasionally it may be necessary for a 2nd visit if the ear wax is particularly hard and difficult to remove. The clinician may recommend the use of Ear Olive Oil or Sodium Bicarbonate drops in preparation for the follow up appointment. Other instruments such as Jobson-Horne, Rosen Inserter and Micro Crocodile Forceps may be used in conjunction with the suction probe to safely remove ear wax. The clinician may also need to use the Bionix OtoClear Ear Wash Spray Kit. This uses body temperature water which is sprayed into the ear at low pressure and at 30 degree angles to gently flush the ear canal avoiding direct pressure towards the ear drum. The clinician may use this method only if there are no contraindications to doing so. Reasons for using this method include; viscous ear wax, ear wax close to the ear drum and for patients who are unable to remain still. It is also necessary to complete a consent form accurately regarding your medical history prior to your appointment.
